The first real performance-orientated cam from BMC/Abingdon ST for the first of the sports Minis, the 997 Cooper. The cam was actually developed in the 1930s for the MG race engines of the time. Predominently 750cc & 850cc capacities. So good that even after some 50 years of trying other cam specs, this '88G229' still stands out as an excellent spec for small-bore engines used mainly on the road, and in particular urban and B road use. Underlines just how good the engine development engineers were back then. They know exactly what they were doing!
Minimal over-lap at TDC gives a very smooth idle and very strong torque from as low as 1200 rpm, but still giving surprisingly good performance right through to 6,000rpm. Giving a free-revving and smooth power delivery. Recommended compression ratio for this cam is 9.5:1.
To avoid premature wear, I very strongly advise, to the point of insistence, that you use the cam followers sold on this site (CST3024 standard type, CST3025 race type) as they have had the face re-profiled to give them the essential correct shape absent from the vast majority of followers on the market.
Never use used cam followers unless it is on the cam they came from and where position numbered.
All cams have A+-type slot drive for oil pump.
Now ground on brand new cross-drilled cam blanks, kit contains CST3229 cam, quality followers, cam lube, valve springs and cam installation instructions.
